SCANDIA HOUSE BALLYMENA NOEL CAMPBELL
Scandia House, Ballymena (Listed Building)
In 2021, we were asked by a local client to develop proposals for the restoration and renovation of Scandia, one of Northern Ireland’s iconic houses of the 1950s, designed by Noel Campbell and featuring an outdoor mosaic by Irish artist Colin Middleton.
This was Campbell’s seminal house in Northern Ireland and followed our restoration of his earlier cantilevered house on Black Hill, Portrush. At the time, Scandia was on the Buildings at Risk Register and had fallen into a significantly dilapidated condition.
Our approach was to sensitively restore the original house, retaining the majority of the existing building and architectural character, while introducing a carefully considered side extension to enlarge the existing car port. Planning approval and Listed Building Consent were secured in 2022, with work commencing on site in 2023.
The project is now complete (2026), giving this important piece of Northern Ireland’s architectural heritage a new lease of life. It looks fantastic!
