5 STAR KILLEAVY CASTLE ESTATE - NEW BUILD EVENT SPACE AND BEDROOM WING - SELECTIVE DESIGN COMPETITION
Wilson McMullen Architects were asked in April 2025 to submit a design proposal for a new event space and bedroom wing extension to the 5 Star Killeavy Castle Estate in Newry, County Armagh. The Killeavy Castle Estate hotel is situated on the slopes of Slieve Gullion. The estate is a central feature of the surrounding Slieve Gullion mountain area, which is part of the larger Ring of Gullion.
Concept Design
This proposal places the building lightly within its landscape, harmonising with the existing hotel and castle estate. The form wraps around a warm, west-facing courtyard—linking the main entrance, function suite, and administration spaces to the north and west, with bedroom accommodation stepping gently down to the south to follow the site’s contours.
Design & Setting
A low-profile raking roof and extensive glazing capture panoramic views of the countryside, castle, and Slieve Gullion, drawing the landscape into the heart of the building. The function suite opens seamlessly onto outdoor terraces, ideal for weddings and events that flow between inside and out.
Courtyard & Connections
The central courtyard acts as a vibrant hub, connecting spaces and framing dramatic views while providing shelter and warmth. The design also maintains visual and acoustic privacy from the existing hotel, ensuring both connection and independence.
Accommodation & Flexibility
Elegant bedrooms enjoy dual aspects and natural ventilation, while ancillary and administration areas are designed for efficiency and adaptability. The scheme allows for future expansion of up to 16 rooms without disrupting the overall balance of the design.
Sustainability
Natural local materials, discreet solar panels, and optional green roofs root the building in its environment, creating a contemporary yet sensitive addition to the estate’s historic landscape.
